First Sunday Drive – West Sacramento to Rio Vista
July 4th, 2021
Meet at Starbucks, 2155 Town Center Plaza, West Sacramento
Leave 10:00 sharp
I’ve always enjoyed the Delta. It will be a short drive, only 35 miles or so along the Deep-Water Channel and the sloughs. With a ride on the Real McCoy Ferryboat, it may take 90 minutes or so. Depends on how many of you show up, as the boat holds only 6 cars at a time and runs every 20 minutes.

Over the years, I have learned that you never know how many will show up on a given day. I had another memorable July 4th FSD from Galt to Ione, and the owners of 20 SLs showed up.
Lunch for those interested will be on the water at Rio Vista – The Point Restaurant on 120 Marina Drive.
A bit of Rio Vista Trivia –
We’ll pass a large but non-descript building at 200 Front Street.  Craig Breedlove, holder of many Bonneville speed records, had intended on breaking the sound barrier in his Spirit of America.
He lived there, and was building his latest jet-powered Spirit of America. He wanted to be the first to break the sound barrier on land. A British team beat him to the record in 1996.
We’ll also pass Foster’s Big Horn on Main Street. On the 1940s, Roy Foster, original owner, was a big game hunter. If you are curious, there are heads of many dozens of animals lining the walls – from elephants to rhinos. The collection is world-famous.

If you still are in a sight-seeing mood head home via CA-160 and stop at Locke. Years ago, I took the Section in a guided tour there. It is the only community built by the Chinese for the Chinese. The Pan American exposition in San Francisco was done and they were in the process of tearing it down. Many of the structures there are built with the redwood of that exposition.
See you on July 4th
